A parent's guide to AI

6 min read·For parents and guardians·Updated 1 July 2026

Your child is growing up in a world where AI is everywhere, from homework helpers to video feeds. You do not need to be technical to guide them well. You need the same things good parenting always needs: curiosity, honest conversation, and clear boundaries.

This guide gives you a practical, jargon-free way to help your child learn AI safely and confidently.

Be curious together, not fearful

Children take their cues from you. Instead of banning AI or fearing it, explore it together. Ask your child to show you a tool they use and how it works. Shared curiosity teaches more than rules alone.

Teach the habit of questioning

The most valuable safety skill is not avoidance, it is judgement. Help your child form simple habits around any AI tool.

  • Ask: could this be wrong or made up?
  • Check important information against a trusted source
  • Never share personal or private details with a tool
  • Remember that AI can be confidently incorrect

Set clear, age-appropriate boundaries

Just as with the internet in general, agree on when and how AI tools are used. Boundaries are not about distrust; they give children a safe space to learn and make mistakes without high stakes.

Encourage creation, not just consumption

The children who thrive with AI are the ones who use it to make and learn, not only to get answers. Encourage your child to build, create, and explore, and celebrate the effort as much as the result.

Give every child the chance to learn AI

We work to bring free AI education to children across India, including those who would otherwise be left out. You can help make that possible.

Frequently asked questions

I am not technical. Can I still help my child with AI?

Absolutely. The most important things you provide are curiosity, honest conversation, and clear boundaries. None of these require technical knowledge.

Should I stop my child from using AI tools?

Banning tools rarely works and can leave children unprepared. Guiding them to use AI thoughtfully, with good habits and boundaries, is far more effective.

How do I keep my child safe when using AI?

Teach them to question outputs, verify important information, never share private details, and treat AI as a helpful but fallible tool.
